Drink & Draw at the Geek Easy! - Chan Sterling Presents

Drink & Draw is back! Chan Sterling (former emcee of Orlando's Skill Focus: Burlesque - and also my life & business partner, if you didn't know) is now running his own production company, and hosting the newest event at A Comic Shop's hidden gem & nerd haven of a bar - The Geek Easy. Every second Thursday of the month, Chan brings in a model (or two!) for figure drawing sessions lasting a few hours. The $10 cover includes a drink from the bar, basic art supplies if you don't have your own, and a raffle ticket for a prize sponsored by A Comic Shop. Each month's even has it's own theme - so far we've done "The Dark Art Knight Rises" in November and "Holiday Edition!" in December - that the models dress up for, and that the prize coordinates with (for example, our November prize was a copy of the newly released Bat-book 'A Death in the Family').

November's event was our first Drink & Draw, so we were still getting our feet wet and seeing what our audience was looking for. Our lovely first ever model, Freckle Sue of Cosplay Deviants, was a great guinea pig - plus, she makes a super cute Harley Quinn! The event was only two hours, with two costumes and more shorter poses rather than longer ones. We plan to start each event with quicker poses and lead up to longer ones so the artist can warm up, but we've already learned that the more longer poses we do, the happier the artists are, leading to us bringing in two models (the long poses are definitely hard to hold!) and lengthening the event for more breaks to stretch (and drink, obviously).

Though we've had a smallish turnout at the event so far, our artists have been really fun to work with and to get to know - we've already had some repeat artists, which is awesome! Hopefully the event will grow a bit, but it's nice to have such a relaxed atmosphere. Also, we've seen some amazing artwork already! Orlando, you have some serious artists in your midst.

We welcome all mediums at the event, and my favorites so far have been an artist who does some gorgeous (and fast!) watercolors, like the ones of Freckle as Harley at the top of the post, and an artist who did some phenomenal charcoal work at this month's event (she also has gorgeous mermaid hair that I'm jealous of). As a former art major who loved figure drawing, I feel equal parts blown away but what people can accomplish so quickly and also totally lacking in any type of artistic skill that doesn't involve a camera.

This month, we had two fantastic models in a variety of festive & Holiday-themed lingerie for our artists to draw - Miss Terri Guest from Derpy Show, and Syber Digit. We alternated between models, allowing both girls to relax a bit between poses, and to also allow us to have a wider range of outfits for out artists to draw. I personally liked the two model version of the event - it meant we could have longer poses for our artists, which I think is a real benefit.

Below you'll find a few more photos from the December event - enjoy! Also, be sure to like Chan Sterling Presents on facebook to find out about upcoming events we have in the works - our next Drink & Draw will be on January 9th, with details TBA.
